Becoming a member

Membership of the library is free. You can join at any branch or mobile of Cork County Council Library by completing a registration form, presenting photo ID and proof of address. There is no minimum age for joining, but those under the age of 18 years require a signature from their parent or guardian. Parents/guardians are responsible for their children in the library, their children’s selections and use of library materials and services, including access to the Internet.

Membership Conditions

Membership will allow you to use the library services as follows:

Adult: access to all library collections, services and to the Internet subject to the Terms and Conditions outlined.

Child under 12: access to the children’s library, to DVDs up to a PG rating, and to children’s Internet services.

Young Adult 12-14: access to the children’s and young adult library, to DVDs up to a 12 rating, and to children’s Internet services.

Young Adult 15-17: access to the adult library, to DVDs up to 15 rating, and to internet services.


Conditions of membership

  • To borrow items you must present your library membership card.
  • Membership cards are non-transferable. The safe-keeping of membership cards is the responsibility of each member or guarantor. Please report lost cards to the library immediately. 
  • Books, audiobooks, DVDs and musical instruments are available for three weeks.  
  • You may borrow up to 12 items on your card. 
  • Items may be returned to any branch or mobile library.  
  • Items may also be renewed at any branch or mobile library. Staff are also happy to renew items over the telephone, please have your library card number on hand. They can also be renewed using your online account. If a hold has been placed on an item you have on loan, a renewal is not allowed. Neither can an item be renewed if the renewal limit has been reached.
  • Overdue notices are a courtesy reminder for your convenience. While fines are no longer charged, borrowers will receive overdue notices to remind them that their items are overdue. Persistent non returning of items after notices have been sent, may result in the temporary removal of library services until the matter is resolved.  
  • A hold/ reservation system is available for those items which are on loan, available at another branch or at another library service. You can place a hold for most items by asking staff or via the library online catalogue.
  • All costs incurred by the Library, if an item is lost or damaged whilst in your care must be reimbursed. The borrower will be required to pay the original cost of the item.
  • If you change your address or name please notify us immediately.
  • Membership details are confidential and will not be disclosed to other parties
